Sharing Insights on the Role of Religion in Fighting Extremism

02/11/2015 | Sarajevo

The Council of Europe has invited Serageldin to participate in the “2015 Exchange on the religious dimension of intercultural dialogue” held in Sarajevo on 2-3 November 2015. The main theme of the conference is “Building Inclusive Societies Together”, with two sub-themes “The role and place of religion in public space” and “Teaching about religions and non-religious beliefs at school”.  The event  brings together high-level representatives of major religious communities present in Europe, representatives of non-religious convictions, academics and government representatives of the Council of Europe Member states, to share experiences and insights. The objective of the exchange is to identify concrete measures to promote tolerance and mutual understanding via the religious dimension of intercultural dialogue. The Conference is organised under the Chairmanship of Bosnia and Herzegovinia of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers

Earlier this year, Serageldin was invited by the Council of Europe to inaugurate a series of debates devoted to the concept of democratic security, where his presentation on “Counteracting radicalisation and extremism – promoting mutual knowledge, understanding, tolerance and respect for diversity” was very well received.

The Council of Europe, headquartered in Strasbourg, is the leading Human Rights organization in Europe. It includes 47member states, 28 of which are member of the European Union.
